General Questions

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, analysis, manufacturing, maintenance, and use of mechanical systems.

Mechanical engineering requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, material science, and structural analysis.

What do Mechanical Engineers do?

Mechanical engineers deal with the design of a component, a machine, a system, a process – anything that needs to be manufactured; anything that moves!

The expertise of a mechanical engineer is needed in the tiniest micro-particle like sensors and switches to the largest systems like cars, spacecraft, and satellites.

Are a Mechanical Engineer and a Mechanic the same thing?

A Mechanical engineer is a person who applies the principles of engineering, physics, and material science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. A Mechanic is a tradesman, craftsman, or technician who uses tools to build or repair machinery.

Where Can a Mechanical Engineer Work?

Mechanical engineers are employed by a number of different industries. They may work in the automotive industry, designing wheelsets, combustion systems, bodyshells, and constructions. Biomedical companies hire mechanical engineers to create life-saving devices such as pacemakers, artificial valves, and robotic surgical assistants. Mechanical engineers may be found in the aerospace industry, building satellites, constructing fuel-efficient tanks, and designing planes, missiles, and rockets for private aeronautics companies and even NASA. But there are many other industries that hire mechanical engineers. You can find mechanical engineers in manufacturing, processing, and power plants. They can work in government agencies. They may also assist with railroad design and implementation.
